Padma Awards - One of the highest civilian
after Bharat Ratan awards in the country which is awarded, in three categories.
Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma
Shri are recommended by the State Governments / Union
Territory Administrations, Central Ministries / Departments, Institutions of
Excellence etc.
The awards are based
on the recommendation of the award committee and after the approval of the
Prime Minister, Home Minister and the President. It was announced every year on
Republic Day.
History of Padma
award?
The Padma Awards are one of the highest
civilian awards in India. The awards are given in various disciplines or areas
of activities, namely, arts, social work, public affairs, science and
engineering, business and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports,
civil service, etc. for exceptional and distinguished service and post or
distinguished service in any field.
The Padma Award was announced for the
first time in the year 1954. The number of Padma awards given a year does not
exceed 120.
Categories of Padma
Awards
Padma Awards conferred in the following
three categories:
1. Padma Vibhushan
Padma Award is the second highest
civilian honor of India after Bharat Ratna. This honor is conferred for
distinguished and remarkable service in any field. In this honor, a 1.3 / 16
inch bronze badge is received as an award. There is a lotus flower in its
center and It has flower leaves in white colour. Padma Vibhushan is written on
the top of this flower at the same time, Ashoka sign is also made on the back
of this badge.
2. Padma Bhushan
Padma Award is India's third highest
civilian honor after the Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan. This award is given
by the Government of India for distinguished service of outstanding quality.
The bronze badge is also given in this honor. There is also a lotus flower in
the middle with three leaves surrounding it. Padmabhushan is written on the top
of this flower.
3. Padma Shri
Padma Shri Award is the fourth highest
civilian honor of India after the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan and Padma
Bhushan. This honor is conferred by the Government of India as a result of
distinguished service in any field. It is an honor given by the Government of
India generally only to Indian citizens. In this honor, a bronze badge is given
in which the lotus flower remains.
What is Padma Award
selection process.
The Prime Minister constitutes a
committee every year to consider the names for this honor. Recommendations of
Padma Awards are received from the State Government / Union Territory
Administration, Union Ministry / Department as well as institutions of
excellence etc.
This committee then considers these
names, Once the award committee makes a recommendation then the Prime Minister,
Home Minister and the President give their approval on it and after that these
honors are announced on the Republic Day.
To bring transparency in the selection
of Padma Awards, the Central Government changed the rules for nomination of
Padma Awards from the year 2017. The Central Government has launched a portal
based online system from 01 May 2016 where the recommendations made by
individuals, Ministries or State Governments can be accepted.
Now the nominations will be accepted
only through the online portal. The recommendation must mention their name and
the number area of work with all other requested details.
These awards are conferred by the
President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan
usually around March/ April every year. For year 2021 the President has
approved conferment of 119 Padma Awards. The list comprises 7 Padma Vibhushan,
10 Padma Bhushan and 102 Padma Shri Awards.
The list includes 29 of the awardees
are women, 10 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI, 16
Posthumous awardees and 1 transgender awardee.
