Mark Mahl served coach the Juvenile Boys to a Bronze medal, and Midget Women to a Gold medal on the 2000 BC Provincial Championships. Mark indicated the Gold medal was a highlight, because no one particular expected this smaller Kamloops club application to compete against Vancouver, the island or Prince George. A majority within the staff went onto other college/university athletic careers. During that summer, Mark Mahl also coached the Workforce BC Midgets girls to a silver medal for the Western Midget Elite Championships.
It was Mark's experience coaching girls through those two a long time that lead him back to Edmonton, and head mentor from the King's University women's volleyball staff. It was there, Mark experience even greater challenges, developing a plan with eight athletes, and a student enrolment of 400. Mark Mahl has since left coaching, but has started looking at getting involved again in BC, he has even thought about coaching beach front volleyball athletes. Mark commented that coaching is a second occupation, tireless without praise, and he has so much respect for everyone that does it and the colleagues he has coached with and against, who continues to provide guidance and instruction to young people.
We asked Mark, who were some of his greatest athletes and ge said, " That is tough, I have experienced the pleasure to coach and coach against so many about the past 15 years, but if I had to choose, some do stand out more than others. Brian Sherban from Ross Ross Sheppard, 5 foot nothing setter having a heart 10 ft tall. John Huk & Lub Billo from NAIT, 6 foot outside players that dominated their opponents and gave you everything they experienced, and Mark Holowaychuk, he put up with me, but was the applications all-time leader and history holder with NAIT. Mark was also NAIT's initial at any time All-Canadian men's volleyball player and a really good guy! Sanj Johal from Kamloops, and then off course the whole Kamloops ladies workforce, but Anja Sigloch was one among those that just shined! With Workforce BC, I coached a young lady named Kimberely Heys, who was and outstanding setter and person. With King's, like Kamloops, I experienced a number of top atheletes that I adored, but Sheri Folkers was at the top of heap. Amazing what this young lady accomplished, and I would be remiss to mention Elly Doef, stellar young lady as well. I don't want to cut anyone out because they were all great! "
Mark closed by summarizing his occupation, " It is what shaped me, educated me, and guided me as the person. I am so blessed to have had all of those great experience, win or lose. Activity of any kind is such a great sculptor of minds, drive, prosperity and failure that culminates into a life time of passion!"
